Read and Rights – A Social Justice Book Club

“Salvation is certainly among the reasons I read. .. Stories have given me a place in which to lose myself. They have allowed me to remember. They have allowed me to forget. They have allowed me to imagine different endings and better possible worlds.”

~ Roxane Gay, ‘Bad Feminist’

RebLaw Scotland and UofG School of Law GO Justice are delighted to bring to you ‘Read and Rights’ – our social justice book club. This year we are launching our book club aimed at bringing together law students, academics, practising lawyers - and anyone with an interest in law and human rights – to discuss books with social justice themes. We believe that books have the power to change the world and are excited to explore radical and innovative literature with you.

To launch the project, our first book under discussion is Mary Robinson’s ‘Climate Justice’ (2018, Bloomsbury). Mary Robinson is a lawyer and was the first female President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In ‘Climate Justice’ she explores personal stories of climate change, from Malawi to Mongolia, discussing her belief that grassroots activism can change the world. “Powerful and deeply humane, Climate Justice is a stirring manifesto on one of the most pressing humanitarian issues of our time, and a lucid, affirmative, and well-argued case for hope.”

Several copies of the book have been purchased for the Law Workshop (on a 24 hour loan basis). Alternatively, the book is available in most public libraries for loan.

Our first book club meeting will take place in the School of Law, Law Workshop (basement library of no.8, the Stair Building) on Thursday 13 February at 6pm-8pm. All announcements will be shared via Twitter by the School of Law (@UofGLaw) and RebLaw Scotland (@RebLawSco)

We look forward to sharing and discussing common interests with you!
